Rest Day 9/19/13: Who’s on your team? – Share your thoughts

Rest Day 9/19/13:RRT13 RoR Boat Pic

Who’s on your team?

Every day you go to work there is a team of people you work with.  Every day you go to the gym there is a team of people holding you accountable and pushing you.  Every day you go home there is a team there to support you and love you.  Recognize your team.  Support them by working as hard as you can every single second of the day and you’ll make them better.

RRT13 RoR Team picsFall is here.  Set a goal, whether it’s a competition or a benchmark, and let’s get after it.  Here is a little video of the Renegade Rowing Team.  After 8 weeks of training, they learned to row together and push themselves to a third place finish at the Rumble on the River last Sunday.  If you’d like to attack your goals and have an awesome team to help you get there, come check out Renegade Rowing – either Online or in Boston!

America is an amazing place to call home.  Today is Patriot Day.  Get outside and do this on the water if possible.  Honor today by working hard in whatever you do, both inside and outside of the gym.  This can be fit into a 2 hour practice with time in between each piece for mobility and rest.  Push yourself, Have Fun, and think of all those serving our country both home and abroad who help make this country awesome.

Today’s Rowing WOD is an opportunity to use rowing as a warmup and cool down.  The deadlifts are for strength and muscular endurance.  Form and speed on the bar should be the focus in hopes of transferring power/skill to the boat.  Push hard in Helen and get that heart rate and breathing up.  This is the second practice that the Boston College Men’s Crew Team did with Renegade Rowing.  If you can do this on the water even better!  This practice should take no longer than 2 hours.  Cut out some of the running if you’re strapped for time.

Post your load for the Deadlift, score for Helen, and splits held for the rowing and running.

Rest Day 8/8/13:

What Competition are you training for this Fall?

An easy goal to kick-start a training cycle and get yourself motivated is picking an event to compete in.  As we come to the end of Summer and Fall picks up there are tons of fun competitions to look forward to.  Earlier this year I committed to running a half-marathon in Newport, RI in October.  This week I found out that I received a singles bid to row at the Head of the Charles in October.  Next weekend I’ll be heading up to CrossFit North Shore with CrossFit Boston for a little throwdown action.  Long story short, I have a lot of fun training to look forward to in the coming months.

What are you training for in the next couple of months?  Who are you training with?  Challenge a training partner to compete with you.  Share what competitions you’re training for to comments!

Have you ever wished you could get a feel for Fran before competing so that you know what to plan for mentally and physically?  If you’ve been trying to break a 7 minute or 8 minute 2k, you’re probably wondering, what will it feel like?  How should it be paced?  What can I do to improve upon my last 2k?

Today’s Rowing WOD is a great way to test out the race pace you’d like to hold on your next 2k.  Set the monitor for 2,000m of work and 5 minutes of rest.  During the first 750m hold the prescribed pace and really execute with form and efficiency.  Then paddle out for the next 250m .  At the 1000m mark build back up and row the next 750m at the prescribed pace.  Finish with a  paddle to recover.  The second and third 2k will be executed similarly.

To see your consistency during the race pace portions set the monitor to record split lengths of 250m.  This is done on the screen when you enter the work and rest.  After the workout go into the memory and check it out.

Post your goal 500m Split and how you executed the 750m portions of today’s Rowing WOD.

Rest Day 8/1/13: Have you tried Team Squats like in the Games? – Share Thoughts

As part of the Renegade Rowing Team Warm-Up, we always practice team squats as if we were in the boat.  It helps to learn how to follow and time the catch with the rest of the boat.  If you’re interested in Rowing on the water Renegade Rowing might be a great option for you.  Check it out!

This year teams competing in the CrossFit Games had to perform Overhead Squats and Log Squats together.  Rowing in an 8+ involves a lot of the same control and timing.  Have you ever tried doing a movement in sync with another person?  How about with 7 other people?

Share your thoughts on team squats?  Have you ever performed them in a team wod?
