How to Start a Successful Paleo Challenge

Why do a Paleo challenge?babysuccess

Probably because your CrossFit box is running one or you heard about it form a book/the internet/friends and want to try it out. However you got there, starting a paleo diet is no piece of cake (pun completely intended). There’s the question of what to eat and what not to eat. Then there’s the learning to cook paleo thing, and on top of that learning to cook paleo and still ENJOY it thing.

I do want to clarify that this doesn’t mean you have to eat exactly this way all the time. Like I’ve said before, a good diet is a healthful eating plan that works for you. So if you find you feel better when you eat some dairy, then add it back in after the challenge. But in general paleo challenges tend to be fairly strict, and if that’s what you’re doing, I can help! Read on for a crash course in planning for a paleo challenge.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

With CRASH-B’s coming up this weekend, today is an important day to check on your body.  How are you feeling?  What’s tight?  What’s bugging you?  Take 15 minutes to mobilize, get loose, and feel good.  Then treat a friend or loved one to dinner!  Enjoy!

Also, if you’re looking for a good pre workout boost of energy checkout this great post from Alex Black of Wicked Good Nutrition.

Simple Apple & Fig Butter

photo-2One question I get asked a lot is, “what should I eat before a workout?”. I’ve talked about the nutrients you need and a few pre-workout meal ideas in a blog post back in November, but to sum it up, you need carbohydrates and protein from low-fat, low fiber foods. Overall, it’s just important that you eat something, and this tends to be hard for people who exercise early in the morning or run a tight schedule. If you need a quick burst of energy before a workout, try this simple and easy apple fig butter. I got the inspiration from the PaleOMG website, but wanted to make a version with no added sugar and fewer ingredients. Try 2-4 spoonfuls for a quick source of fuel before your next workout.

Rest Day 1/24/13: Get out and do something different! – Share your experience

Some friends doing something different on a Saturday morning! Competing against another gym!

Some friends doing something different on a Saturday morning! Competing against another gym!

Get out and do something different!

It’s to easy during the winter months and during training in general to become narrow-minded and trapped in a routine of the same old, same old.  Sometimes we need to break the cycle, even if the cycle is going well, to refocus and make even more progress toward our goals.  Today’s challenge is to enjoy some active rest and recovery.  Get out of your gym or house and do something different.  Go for a walk/hike, cross-country ski, run, bike, swim, play a game/sport, try yoga, walk up and down the stairs in your building, treat a friend to a hot meal, or simply stop everything, lay down for 5 minutes, and do nothing but relax and focus on your breathing without thinking about anything else.

If you have any revelations, great experiences, or you simply had some fun, share it with the community in a comment!

Paleo Stuffed Peppers

photo 1Why does getting back on track after the holidays seem so difficult sometimes? Motivation is high this time of year, but many find it tough to stick with that new diet. One of the best ways to help you stick with a new – or renewed – diet is to take the extra time to make some delicious food, instead of forcing yourself to eat something that tastes boring or plain bad because it’s “healthy”. These fairly easy stuffed peppers will make things a little easier.

Rest Day 12/30: What was your December Goal? Did you achieve it?

Rest Day 12/30:

Have you put in the work to achieve your goal?

Have you put in the work to achieve your goal?

What was your December Goal?  Did you achieve it?

As 2012 comes to a close it’s a good time to look back on the year and reflect on what we’ve accomplished.  Did you have a goal for the year?  A New Year’s resolution perhaps?  How did that go?  It’s time to start thinking about what you’d like to accomplish next year.  Start by looking back at December.  Did you set an appropriate goal?  Was it positive, specific, and controllable?  Try to figure out what you did well to work toward that goal and what you need to improve.

Share your successes and thoughts!
