Rest Day 8/9: What’s keeping you from rowing or eating well? Share!

Rest Day 8/9:

What’s keeping you from rowing or eating well?

We all have excuses for not being our absolute best.  What’s yours?  How can you do better, row more, and eat healthier?  Below is a great post from Alex Black of Wicked Good Nutrition on what can go wrong with diets and what you can do to avoid pitfalls.  Think about your experiences with food and how you might do better in the future.

OK, I’m not really going to tell you HOW to fail, but I will talk about a few ways you might have in the past, and how you can fix it. This may surprise a few people, but you can be overweight or at your ideal weight on any diet. I have seen a vegan patient who was very obese, while on the other hand a professor in Kansas lost 27 pounds eating nothing but Twinkies, Oreos, Doritos, and sugary cereal. While I don’t recommend this “Twinkie diet” – professor Haub was doing it to make a point about energy balance – I will say that maintaining a healthy weight and getting the best performance out of your body is based on many factors. Research has shown a variety of eating patterns including the Mediterranean diet, Paleolithic diet, and low-fat diets can help people lose weight and improve health markers like cholesterol and blood sugar. No matter what type of nutrition plan you follow, there are a few key things that will help you maintain optimal weight and perform at your best. In this post, I’ll talk about some of the common mistakes people make, and how you can fix them.

Hug It Out! – DC 5/28

Memorial Day is a great time to be with family and friends as we remember those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom.  If you’re lacking hugs in your life, use today as an opportunity to change things up.  Live life and enjoy the journey, it’s to short not to.

Daily Challenge 5/28:

Greet everyone you see today with a hug!

Our soldiers fought hard for us to have the opportunity to hug it out with those we care about.

What are you talking about? – Performance and Self Talk – DC 5/22

Performance

Performance is the beautiful moment in sport when an athlete gets to put it all together.  Performance is the combination of mind and body, of physical and mental preparation.  Performance is when an athlete gets to challenge the skills they’ve learned in order to feel total immersion in the activity.  Those who perform best experience a narrow focus of attention on the present and no fear of failure.  Exceptional performance feels like complete control, the slowing of time, and the feeling of everything being automatic and effortless.  To perform well athletes must have control over emotion, thoughts, and arousal.  They must exist in a state of high self-confidence, be physically and mentally relaxed, and highly energized.  Some of the tools we’ll use to improve performance include concentration and self-talk.

Self Talk

Self-talk is that “voice inside your head” otherwise known as your thoughts.  The mind controls the body and being aware of what that voice is saying can improve performance.

Daily Challenge 5/22:

Check Yourself!  During your work today, whether it be in the gym, a meeting, or at home, make sure you’re using positive self talk and not adding undue stress to your performance.

Post your thoughts to comments.  How does self talk affect your performance?

Life and Balance – Daily Challenge 5/10

Life and Balance

Life is a balancing act.  In order to be happy and healthy there must be a balance in all areas of our life, Self, Family,School, Work, Friends, Sleep, Nutrition, etc.  Excessive focus on any one area can lead to the downfall of the others.  Remember that too much of a good thing can be bad.

Daily Challenge 5/10:

Call a family member or friend you haven’t been in touch with for a while.

Tell them what you’ve been up to!  Find out what they’ve been up to.  Figure out when you might see them again.  If you need something else to talk about tell them about rowing and fitness!

Don’t think twice about this challenge.  The first person that pops into your head call!  Not only will it improve your balance, but it will probably improve theirs.

Ready Go!

Afterwards let us know your thoughts on life and balance and how you try to achieve it.

High Five! – Daily Challenge 5/8

The High FIve is a tried and true method to get Awesome!  It is used in sports to substitute people in and out of games.
Coaches use it to motivate players before competition and afterward as a form of congratulations.  Teammates get creative and make up crazy secret high fives.  Parents give children high fives for accomplishing things.  Also, if you think about it, when a baby finally learns to give a High Five it’s like they’ve joined society and have plugged into the joy of life.

Renegade Rowing is all about enjoying the journey and finding your passion in everyday life.  Get excited about your day and share your passion with someone in the form of a High Five!

Daily Challenge 5/8:

High Five the first 5 people you see after reading this post!
