Blade Work

When is the blade Feathered/Squared?

At the CrossFit Rowing Course June 8-9 we will be learning how the blade and the oar move with the body during the stroke.  If you’re interested in dialing in your technique and pushing your rowing to the next level come to CrossFit Boston and Community Rowing.

On Saturday we will be crushing it with CrossFit Rowing Coach Shane Farmer on the Concept2 Ergometer.  On Sunday we will be putting our new and improved skills to work rowing in shells on the Charles River.  Sign up here and come enjoy the summer in Boston!

Share your thoughts on when the blade should be feathered and squared to comments!

Rest Day 4/7/13: Sitting on the erg/boat; What is Port and what is Starboard? What direction is the boat going?

Rest Day 4/7/13:

What side is Port and what side is Starboard?

What direction is the boat going?

Sometimes asking these simple questions even on the erg is helpful in thinking about balance, technique, and efficiency of movement.  If you ever plan to row on the water you will want to know the answers.  Especially if you want to stay safe and go fast!

Will you be at the CrossFit Rowing Course June 8-9 in Boston?

If you enjoy Rowing, especially when combining it with CrossFit, then you should come get some knowledge on both!  CrossFit Boston will be hosting a 2-Day CrossFit Rowing Trainer’s Course June 8-9.  On Saturday CrossFit Rowing Coach Shane Farmer will be dropping some know-how on the erg and on Sunday all participants will get a chance to take their new-found knowledge to the water at Community Rowing.

Rest Day 1/24/13: Get out and do something different! – Share your experience

Some friends doing something different on a Saturday morning! Competing against another gym!

Get out and do something different!

It’s to easy during the winter months and during training in general to become narrow-minded and trapped in a routine of the same old, same old.  Sometimes we need to break the cycle, even if the cycle is going well, to refocus and make even more progress toward our goals.  Today’s challenge is to enjoy some active rest and recovery.  Get out of your gym or house and do something different.  Go for a walk/hike, cross-country ski, run, bike, swim, play a game/sport, try yoga, walk up and down the stairs in your building, treat a friend to a hot meal, or simply stop everything, lay down for 5 minutes, and do nothing but relax and focus on your breathing without thinking about anything else.

If you have any revelations, great experiences, or you simply had some fun, share it with the community in a comment!

Rest Day 10/11: Go For a Walk! (Along a River if Possible)

Rest Day 10/11:

Go For a Walk!

(Along a River if Possible)

Life get’s crazy, especially this time of year as we gear up for fall parties and the holidays.  Take 15 minutes today to stop.  Breathe.  And go for a walk.  If you’ve got a river or body of water nearby go for a stroll and watch some rowing.  How does the boat move in relation to the body?  What part of the stroke does the boat move the fastest?  How’s the form look compared to your erging?

If you’re lucky enough to do this please share your thoughts, where you were, and what you saw!
